The legend of the cat and the cucumber explained
There are some videos around the web revealing cats that are frightened of cucumbers. And no one knows why.
We found some technical opinions about this. Dr Roger Mugford, specialist in animal behaviour said for Telegraph: “I think that the reaction is due to the novelty and unexpectedness of finding an unusual object secretly placed whilst their heads were down in the food bowl.” (source: telegraph.co.uk)
Jill Goldman, certified animal behaviorist in southern California has the same opinion that cats would not normally see cucumbers on the floor and that’s what’s triggering that natural startle (source: news.nationalgeographic.com)
Con Slobodchikoff, animal behaviorist and author of “Chasing Doctor Dolittle: Learning the Language of Animals,” states that “Cats are genetically hard-wired through instinct to avoid snakes” and considers that “Cucumbers look enough like a snake to have the cat’s instinctive fear of snakes kick in”. Ok, enough words, let’s have some fun 🙂
